    Default PAC 12 POY

Should clearly be Nick Johnson now that Kyle Anderson gets suspended for Oregon game. Not that he wouldn't have won it either way, but there should be no question now.

Does the PAC-12 take off the court issues into account for POY awards?
I blame ESPN, PAC-12 Network, Larry Scott, East Coast Bias, Direct TV, Dish Network, The Honda Center, PAC-12 Refs, and Mark Lyons

    Clearly?

Well, he is the best player on the best team - but that was true before the Anderson thing.

My ratings love Wright of Utah - don't know if he's POY (teams not in the running for a title at all), but he's been the best P12 player based on the whole season. Nationally in terms of HnR - at last update - Wright was 9th with a 167, Anderson 17th with a 160, Scott 25th with a 157, NJ 33rd with a 154.

Delon Wright is a stud. He should easily make 1st Team Pac12. Barring a horrible stretch of games for Nick I think he takes it home.

No disrespect but ratings aren't everything. Yes he's clearly the PAC12 POY.

Even more so, Arizona could easily sweep player, freshman and coach of the year. Curious if 1 team has ever swept all conference end of year awards?

Kenpoms KPOY ratings are weighted for team success, hence Nick's high ranking.

Mine are too. Difference is, Ken has picked 1 or 2 guys (in this case AG & NJ) from every top team and a few hand selected others, and ran some #'s. I've run the numbers of every D1 guy in the nation. His team weights are way over skewed (my usual example: http://kenpom.com/blog/index.php/weblog/entry/sec_log5 - all 5 all SEC players from the same team that lost 5 conference games, 1 game better than 2nd place) - which is why he needs to hand select his kPOY candidates, or his results might look crazy.

The reason NJ is "only" 33rd nationally in my ratings (top 1.5% of D1) is because the ratings see ALL his teammates as being good/very good players also. He's not SIGNIFICANTLY better than many of his teammates, they are all (even York - around 300 nationally) highly rated. 6 of the top 21 and 7 of the top 27 P12 players are Wildcats by my numbers. You can't really have that AND the very best player in all the land too - unless you are possibly the greatest college team in about 40 years (a team that destroys about everything in it's path all season).

That being said - NO prob with anyone thinking NJ should be 1st team AA, or P12 POY, or whatever. There have been MANY guys historically that rated worse or much worse that won that type of acclaim (2010 had Scottie Reynolds, Sherron Collins, & AND Wes Johnson as is team AAs for example). Being top 50 nationally is very much "in the picture" - it's like being a top 6 team as being "in the picture" as the top team. As long as overrated guys like CJ Fair, Jahii Carson, Shabazz Muhammad, etc. don't get the awards over much more deserving (and MUCH higher rated players) - I'm ok with it.

FOY is a given. My ratings have RHJ & AG as pretty much a toss up - WAY ahead of Lavine (over 20 rating points and over 400 spots higher in the national rankings) and Williams-Goss. We ALL know AG will win it hands down.

I really don't see why Miller wouldn't be COY, I don't think any P12 team just overwhelmingly performed over their projections. Especially if Arizona wins out the rest of the regular season w/o Ashley, it seems like Coach Miller would easily be the choice.

I sure hope that Nick gets it. He is, after all, the only AZ player to get a Pac POW so far - in 16 weeks. (Ya, I'm a homer, and feel the Cats are slighted here). I'm just too cynical to believe this conference will send those accolades our way - for POY or COY. I mean, think about it - they gave POY in '12 to Jorge Guitierrez - Jorge? Go figure. I guess we'll see.

But, regardless of who gets these awards, to win this conf outright and then win the PAC tourney will be most important. To cut the nets and wear the hats and get handed the trophy - makes the best statement.

    GO CATS!!!!
I always think we're gonna' win

    Statman,

I know you have explained several times before but could you explain how Roberto Nelson comes in at 10th on your ratings?
I would have thought that he would have been ahead of Dwight Powell and maybe Josh Scott from the games that I have seen on both of them.
Is it a usage/efficiency thing or a lot of other smaller factors combined?
    Marcus Garvey,MLK,Malcolm X,Joe Louis,Rosa Parks,etc..

Nick is the only Pac-12 player to make the latest Naismith cut.
That selection committee must think he is the PAC POY.

Nick Johnson is CLEARLY PAC POY.

Anderson is good and deserves a look, but Nick should have this locked up. Higher on most metric sites to include Kenpoms National Player of the Year watch. He is the only PAC player on the Naismith top 10 and is the best player on the best team not only in this conference but also the country.

ALL PAC TEAM: In order of how I'd rank them for PAC POY race.

Nick Johnson, Kyle Anderson, Delon Wright, Josh Scott, Joseph Young or Ba****ski.

PAC FRESHMAN TEAM / FRESHMAN OF THE YEAR: In order of how I'd rank them for the PAC Freshman of the Year.

Aaron Gordon, Rondae Jefferson, Zach Lavine, Nigel Williams-Goss, Wesley Gordon.

    PAC Coach of the Year.

    1) Sean Miller - Coach of the best team and dealt with as much adversity as anyone else in the conference, and succeeded.
    2) Larry K - Utah really played well above their expectations.

    - I thought Tad or Monty or Altman would make a much stronger case this year, but all of them have struggled too much and haven't performed remotely as well as the first two people on the list.

    - Now I realize this list is incredibly homer looking as it has Arizona sweeping the major awards, but I also think its deserving and I don't think there are arguments to be made for more deserving candidates.

Also, team's success should be a factor when determining Player of the Year nationally and of a conference. It makes sense to do it and there is nothing wrong with it.

Do you guys think Nick will or should win defensive player of the year? I think he should....and he will get to guard 3 of the leagues top five scoters in the next thre games. I thought the tide turned to bachynski after the asu game, but he has followed it up with some really bad games.

I think nick is clearly the POY, AG/RHJ is a toss up for FOY, and miller is COY. I can see the argument for bachynski, but I think Nick's body of work is well deserving of DOY.

Bachynski will be DPOY. Setting the conference career block record? That's a big deal.

Does the conference even give out a DPOY award?

    COY - Miller
    FOY - Gordon
    POY - Nick or Anderson

I don't think this conference let's Arizona sweep the awards for political reasons. Hell I wouldn't be surprised if this conference gives the COY award to Krystowiak knowing how they do things.

Yes...I don't remember who won it last year, but I remember Gutierrez sweeping the awards his senior year.

Trusting this conference to give us one of those three awards is pushing it - but to run the table for all three? Nope. Not gonna' happen.

    Pac will probably give:

    POY - Anderson (maybe Nick)
    COY - Utah's Krystowiak and
    FOY - Washington's Nigel Williams-Goss
I always think we're gonna' win

i wouldnt be surprised if not player on the team won a conference award this season. its already shocking that we we're ranked #1 for 8 weeks, been in the top 4 ALL season, and have only managed to garner 1 player of the week award for the conference..
Theres good, and there's ARIZONA good..
    The difference is VAST
