Default Harris Poll: College Basketball Least Popular Major Sport

This is absolutely amazing to me.

For me personally, my rankings of favorite things to watch are in this order:

    NFL
    College Football
    NBA
    College Basketball
    MLB
    NHL
    And everything else is behind.

A lot of you guys likely have college hoops in your top 1 or 2.

Well apparently, we're in the minority. Only 3% of those surveyed said College Basketball is their favorite sport.

That's according to a survey taken this month by the Harris Poll, which has been asking adult fans, ages 18 and over, about their favorite sport since 1985.
In 2014, 35 percent of fans call the NFL their favorite sport, followed by Major League Baseball (14 percent), college football (11 percent), auto racing (7 percent), the NBA (6 percent), the NHL (5 percent) and college basketball (3 percent).

In 1985, the first year the poll was taken, the NFL bested MLB by just one percentage point (24 to 23 percent), but since then interest in baseball has fallen while the NFL has experienced a huge rise in popularity.

Nine percent fewer fans call baseball their favorite sport over the 30-year span, the biggest drop of any sport. The polling numbers suggest that the sport hasn't been able to recover from a popularity standpoint from 1994, when a strike forced the cancellation of the World Series.

One other significant drop was in professional golf. Throughout Tiger Woods' pro career, which began in 1996, no less four percent of the U.S. adult population called golf their favorite sport. But since 2010, the first year after Woods' extramarital affair scandal, only two percent of Americans have called it their favorite sport.

A sport's popularity varies greatly based on demographics. More people who live in rural areas on the East coast say they're fans of the NFL than the general U.S. population. Those with an annual household income of more than $100,000 are more likely to be baseball fans, while African Americans are less likely to enjoy the sport, the poll reveals. More southerners call college football their favorite sport, while those with a high school education or less tend to gravitate to auto racing.

Can't speak for everyone, but while Arizona basketball is my favorite team, college basketball as a whole is not great. In terms of wanting to watch a random game between two teams I have no rooting interest in, NFL and College Football are definitely above College Basketball. College basketball is pretty slow and often low quality.

The thing I'd say ryno, this study only takes into account each persons absolute favorite sport, at least from my best understanding. Even though you have college hoops much higher than 7th on your list, for the purposes of this poll you'd count as one of the 97% who didn't have college hoops as their favorite.

I think as an event everyone loves march madness, but not as many people are captivated by the season long drama. I've talked to a few people who aren't die hard fans of any team about this, and they simply say the game isn't as entertaining to them as the other major sports.

Haha I'm surprised there's THAT big of a gap between NFL and college football if you have NFL as number one. College football is by far the most similar to its professional counterpart of any game at the collegiate level IMO

I'd agree for sure that the NFL and college football are the most similar, but to be honest I think that basketball is the only sport where the college game is MUCH more interesting to watch. Just my opinion but the NBA is terrible to watch if it's not a do-or-die game for a team in the playoffs...

This survey looks like respondents only gave an answer of one sport... their favorite. In that sense it is nice to have College Basketball considered a major sport. Basically this just means that 3% of those polled were from Lawrence, Lexington, or Tucson.

This survey does not rank sports from most popular to least. It only shows what % of people call each sport their one absolute favorite.

This is TV only. It would change if I were to go to a game.

College football & NFL are on equal footing... Love these two
    College Basketball
    NASCAR
College Baseball, but only my CATS.
    MLB, but only the Indians.
Women's Mud wrestling... Just thought I would throw that in there.
    NBA...Not at all.
    NHL, like the NBA

I grew up loving the NFL - not so much anymore.

I don't get why so many people have it #1 - outside of fantasy and gambling. I don't do either.

    My rank:

    1. College Basketball
    2. College Football
    3. MLB
    4. NBA
    5. NFL

This is probably more along the lines of what I think too. Nice list.

    Default I'm one

I would be one of those that puts college basketball as numero uno on my list.

Then college football, with any professional sports lagging way behind. I don't really do professional sports.

It makes sense to me. College Basketball isn't many people's favorite sport. I bet though that on average it ends up being higher. I'd imagine CBB comes out pretty average on most people's list.

    uofa basketball
    NFL
    NBA
    College basketball
    College Football
    MLB
    Olympics
    golf

I will pick UofA basketball over anything but if im just watching a random game i will pick the NBA everytime. The quality of play is just so superior. Same for the NFL unless its a top 10 type matchup in the college game, which i think is part of the problem. NCAA games are often awesome vs awful and that just isnt fun. As far as watching baseball i probably watch 130ish red sox games a year but very few from other teams so tough to rank that too high.

Im a big basketball head as Ive been playing forever, and growing up in Tucson, so obviously I love some college basketball. It seems more pure than the NBA to me. But i can definitely see why its not very popular. Theres alot of low quality, low scoring games (especially recently, it seems like scoring has fallen).

I look at it as which sporting event would I prefer to attend ( US leagues only). List as follows:

    NFL
    College Football
    NHL
    MLB
    College BBall
    NBA
    College Hockey
You couldnt pay me to attend a NASCAR event

ps anyone who has never been to a hockey game live doesn't know what they're missing. Even if you have no interest in the sport I highly recommend going to at least one hockey game. You won't regret it.
