I like the fact that a lot of our recent recruits are described as "high motor" guys. Craig Victor is the newest but both Gordon and Hollis-Jefferson are described that way as well. When I hear that I picture a team that doesn't give the opposition an inch of breathing room for 40 minutes. We have the guys this year to be in the face of the opposing team every possession. That does not mean it has to be full court pressure or even a trapping scheme it's just giving 100% effort.
Grant Jerrett was/ is a great shooter. He also blocked shots well but he lacked passion and he will never be called a "high motor" guy. The personality of the team is better off without him IMO. I will miss Solo and Parrom. But I think, defensively, we will be much better than last year. We won't disappear for stretches like we did because with 5 guys playing all out for 40 minutes you don't disappear. We will start games this year with a flourish and surprise the other team with how hard we are coming at them from the opening tip.
Ashley has a lot of emotion that, hopefully, the new guys will help bring out in a positive way. I wish I could watch Hollis-Jefferson guard Ashley and Gordon every day in practice! i think Zeus can dominate. If this were the "good old days" he'd be a 4 year guy who became an All-american. As it stands I think by the end of the year he should be a monster.
There is no doubt about Johnson's effort level and TJ plays defense like a boss. Throw in a little Mayes defense (stay healthy Mayes!) and, well, the sky is the limit.
It all starts with effort on defense and Miller is recruiting guys whose "motor" is always a positive trait. That means we will have a hard-playing team. That's is all I ask. Well, that and a final four this year.
