Can Aaron Gordon break Bayless' record, or are we too deep?
Just saw this posted on the UA Hoops Twitter, and I wondered what PGU's thoughts were on arguably the best recruit we've ever landed's chances of breaking a record that has stood for only 6 years.
Top 5 Freshman Scoring Records:
1. Jerryd Bayless 592
2. Coniel Norman 576
3. Gilbert Arenas 523
4. Sean Elliott 499
5. Eric Money 492
Bayless played in 30 games, and averaged 19.7 ppg while shooting at a 45.8% clip. You have to expect Gordon to shoot at a better percentage as he will likely not take as many long jumpshots from the front court. However, 19 ppg is a lot to average for a freshman - and it would take a similar effort for Gordon to have a shot. Some may say that we have too much talent, so he won't get as many shots as he needs, but I remind you Bayless did play with future NBA players Chase Budinger & Jordan Hill who both handled plenty of the scoring load at 17ppg and 13ppg respectively.
Personally, I think the only thing that holds him back is the system. However, Derrick Williams showed in his Sophomore season that you can score 19ppg in Miller's system, so it's not out of the realm of possibility. He should have plenty of touches, and doesn't have seniors demanding touches like he would have had last season.
So what say you PGU?
Does Aaron Gordon have a chance to be at the top of this list? And if not - where do you see him landing in the top 5? Or do you see him deferring to Nick, Brandon, Kaleb, TJ, and other guys who've been in the system longer to score?
