I'm curious to what everyone's thoughts are on 3 Point Defense.
For Exhibit A, I give to you a blog post from the person I most respect covering college bball, Ken Pomeroy: the kenpom.com blog. In short, he argues that 3 Point % Defense is basically out of the control of the defense, much in the same way Free Throw % Defense is.
For Exhibit B, I give to you the fact that from 2005/6-2011/2, Sean Miller's teams were ranked in the Top 100 of 3 Point % Defense every single year, including back to back #3 rankings the last 3 years.
For Exhibit C, I give you our current ranking of 289, Opponents are shooting 8% better than they did last year.
It's hard to argue with either set of data. It appears that generally, 3 Point % Defense is random, but clearly there is something about Miller's defense that leads to excellence in this area. Something that would appear to be lacking in this years team. If we were defending as well as we did last year, teams would be averaging nearly 6 points less per game against us. Suffice it to say those 6 points would have made a big difference in a lot of games
So, what's the verdict? Is there something we are doing wrong, and if so, what? Or have we just had some bad luck facing some streaky opponents?
