  • UW Loss Highlights Turner's Potential Impact

    AW Butler

Josiah Turner committed a foul that appeared to cost Arizona a critical home game.

You’re familiar with the buildup – whiteout, ESPN, GameDay, first place on the line. A furious late rally, capped by Solomon Hill’s 26th, 27th, and 28th points, tied the game with nine seconds remaining. McKale was erupting. The Huskies were stunned. Game on.

We often refer to the end of a game, particularly a close one, as the waning moments of a contest. If you’ll recall elementary school astronomy, waning refers to the dwindling appearance of the moon; waxing the opposite. It’s an obvious literary usage, analogizing the shrinking moon to the shrinking clock.

The reality, however, is that these moments are everything but waning. Nothing is shrinking but the numbers on the clock. Beyond that, every play is enlarged, each bucket more important than the last. These moments aren’t waning, they’re waxing. They unfold in a nearly incomprehensible immediacy, waiting just long enough to discover the hero of the magnified occasion. Or a scapegoat.

Following Hill’s game-tying three and as the Huskies inbounded the ball, a play of game changing magnitude was forthcoming. Perhaps it would be a Washington drive and dish or another step-back jumper. Perhaps it would be a stop by the Arizona defense and a chance to win in the game that looked all but over minutes prior. I was watching, you were watching, and we both knew something was going to happen at this most critical of junctures.

    A foul.

Not the foul, just a foul. It was Turner’s attempt to make the big play, draw the charge on the rumbling CJ Wilcox to force a UW turnover and subsequent Arizona game-winning possession.
In his effort, Josiah Turner failed. He sent Wilcox to the line for the presumably game sealing free throws, the once deafening McKale crowd silenced. The moment could have swallowed Turner. It would have been understandable for him to wane, perhaps befitting of the mercurial freshman just one game removed from his temper-less ejection. Turner quite easily could have disappeared into the gravity of the instant.

    He didn’t.

In five dribbles he took the ball the length of the court, made a move few others are gifted enough to even imagine, and got to the rim. The layup to tie the score for the seventh time that evening was vengefully blocked by Tony Wroten. Josiah Turner had failed for the second time in less than six seconds of play.

In the waxing moments of that game Josiah Turner showed us all why every team in the nation wanted him to wear their jersey. He showed poise beyond his years and beyond his maturity level. The big point guard from Sacramento makes plays. He proved as much on Saturday and now, leading into a no less daunting weekend in the Bay Area, he’ll be asked to so once again. The ball in his hands, a part of the season on his shoulders, he’ll be asked to succeed.

    He will.

No one succeeds in every late game situation. I'm just happy that we now may have two players that seemed to want to bear the burden of missing or making the game-changing play.

      Good write-up.

had turner been a little more aggressive and gone for the dunk, we're in OT. hate to say it, but he also needs to do this on breakaways for that exclamation bang. hell, nothing is more deflating on your foe's spirit than an easy dunk.

We can't dwell on the past. The University of Arizona has a very bright future with talented players like Turner. I don't blame him one bit for that loss. It is a team sport. You win as a team and lose as a team. Turner went all guts but came up with no glory. Give him a little more time, there will be plenty of glory.

hope he reads this or someone he knows reads this but JT is the man and will be a big time baller before the end of this year. we are going to be talking about how dominant he will be next year kind of like D Will exploded his sophomore year. Then everyone around the nation will keep saying "man coach Miller sure knows how to develop players." Can't wait!!! (Bart Scott Voice)

I saw what JT did over here in Jeddah Saudi Arabia. About an hour later I defended him against my wife who says he was out of line. There is no better way to say what he did than you guys here have said it at pointguardu. Thank you. I can't wait to see his future in the Wildcats program.

All say it again, the record books say he failed, I say he succeeded, he made the plays that needed to happen. I thought he made a good defensive play and was pushed and then at the end he was clearly fouled. Josiah is getting better and better by th game, Major props to him for his development, I enjoy watching him make plays. Bear Down Josiah!

I've been the biggest Turner supporter out there, and I have been very critical of his defense on that last play. It was bad, and I'm sure he knows that. However, while much of the talk has been of the foul I agree what he did on our final possesion getting the ball coast to coast for the layup was impressive.

For you calling for the dunk, a dunk takes longer than a layup, and he may not have gotten it off in time. He did exactly what he was supposed to do by taking it coast to coast for a great look. He took it up strong, and never once hesitated as he hauled ass down the court. It was a great play, and he executed that possesion as perfectly as it could have been done. He did what he was supposed to do, found the open look, took the ball strong to hole, and drew contact. If Wroten doesn't get his hand on that ball, and he got the foul he very much earned it coulda have been ball game. 3 the hard way.

Very good piece AWB. Like Coach Miller has said all year long, our margin of error is very slim right now. The UW result would be different for us with a 1/2 a second here, or another second there. Josiah is really turning it around now and improving every game. If we can get Bunnies to start improving on offense, then we should be in good shape come PAC12 tourney time.

Love the write up, love the style, nice work.

My coach, your coach, every coach always says it is not the plays at the end of the game that win or lose the game, but every play, start to finish, determines the outcome. Missed layups, free throws, silly turnovers, etc that is why you win or lose as a team.

Honestly, the most fun i've had watching this team is JT's development. It's going to be awesome when he gets elite talent down low to dish to.

Biggest difference between now and two months ago... We have two players that WANT the ball in the 'waning' minutes in Hill and Turner... This should be a fun to watch!

Turner is NASA Rocket fast with the ball. He has grown every week and with each challenge that he has been involved. It was five guys and a rotation of up to eight that helps us win or lose a game. Jet flew with the ball got fouled and fouled. It's the way the ball bounces sometimes. I will take JT with less than 5sec to go every time. And he will hit or miss but no matter what he is the best shot to win and more than not he is a Winner!!

nice write up, i don't fault josiah at all for the foul, for one he's a frosh and still learning, two it shows he is a guy who is willing to step up and try to make big plays. we've lost a lot of close ones this year, and won a lot of close ones last year, it's just how it goes. but our team is continually getting better and our future is really bright. bear down

Great Write up. With Mayes and Parrom hurt he will get tons of playing time. This will help speed up his developmental process.

He played with a lot of poise this weekend, especially in the Cal with 4 fouls he managed to stay in the game and committed only one in the Stanford game. we need JT on the floor with a depleted bench and he delivered.
