Reports are that Mark Lyons will leave Xavier and PGU has learned Arizona is one of the schools he is strongly considering. Lyons is on track to graduate so he would be eligible to play immediately. He was originally recruited to Xavier by Sean Miller.
The 6'1 point guard was second on the team in scoring last year, averaging 15.1 points. Lyons also averaged 2.7 assists and 3.4 rebounds. Lyons had a turbulent season, being suspended for his role in the Xavier-Cincinnati fight. Reports have indicated that he was benched late in the season, but he did play 38, 29, and 40 minutes in Xavier's three NCAA tournament games. Lyons' turbulent season ended with the mutual decision by Lyons and head coach Chris Mack that it was best for both parties to move on.
Lyons, whose nickname is "Cheeks," had seven games where he scored 20+ points, and nine games with 5+ assists. Lyons shot 39% from beyond the arc and had a 1.2 assist-turnover. Tu Holloway was the primary ball handler, but both guards distributed the ball. Lyons is obviously familiar with Miller's system, and was selected to the Atlantic 10 third team by the conference coaches.
It's not a done deal but it's looking good for Mark Lyons to transfer to U of A. He could be exactly what Arizona needs next season, given the void at point guard created by Turner leaving. Likewise, Arizona could be exactly what Lyons needs to finish out his career with coaches and a system he is familiar with.
