  • Jabari Brown to ASU?

    AK Murthy

Brown, a 6'5" 215 lb shooting guard out of Oakland, CA, is reportedly leaning toward ASU. The Sun Devils made up ground rapidly in Brown's recruitment, and are now believed to be the odds on leader to land the elite guard's services.

Long thought to be Washington's to lose, Brown cooled on the Huskies after Lorenzo Romar inexplicably filled his spot by taking local product Hikeem Stewart. With elite 2011 point guard Anthony Wroten Jr on the verge of a commitment to Washington, Brown might have felt that Romar did not have room for him in Seattle and thus warmed up to other schools.

UConn, the other big player in the Brown recruitment, has developed a very good relationship with Brown. The coaching staff and their ability to develop pro players has appealed to Brown since the very beginning, but playing for legendary coach Jim Calhoun would require a cross country trip for the west coast kid.

Distance is a major factor for Brown, and the fact that ASU is closer to the west coast is a huge advantage for them. Brown is also considering Oregon, though Dana Altman's team is fully in rebuilding mode and likely won't be competitive any time soon in the Pac-10.

At ASU, though, Brown could be part of the school's best recruiting class ever. Former Arizona recruit Jahii Carson has already committed to the Sun Devils, so a Brown commitment could make ASU's 2011 class nationally relevant. Carson and Brown would join a sophomore Keala King, giving ASU a deadly backcourt rotation that could do major damage in the conference in 2011-12.

PointguardU watched every game the Oakland Soldiers played this summer and Brown's ability to draw contact and get to the line consistently was his greatest strength. It's arguable that he was the best player on the immensely talented Soldiers roster and clearly he was the most physically prepared player for the college level.

Brown is also considering Georgia Tech, but the Yellow Jackets have less going for them than UConn and are still a cross country trip away. Luckily for ASU, it seems that the stars are lining up to land Brown. If the recruitment holds pace, we could see ASU land its second big time player in the 2011 class and give the Pac-10 a much needed boost in star power.

ASU coach Herb Sendek will meet with Brown for an in-home visit Tuesday night in Oakland, California.

Man, I am all about the best West coast talent staying and playing in the Pacific 10 Conference. As long as ASU is not one of those teams. I'll believe it when I see it, but I DO NOT want any top players going to ASU. EVER. UCLA, Washington, Cal, Oregon, whatever.....but ASU? How the hell is Herbie doing it? I know with Jahii he had the hometown discount. But Jabari Brown? Keala King? He even had an early verbal commit from Josiah Turner. WTF...Over?

It sounds like a situation where he has nowhere else to go. UW filled up, Oregon is in shambles, KU will likely land McLemore, and Arizona landed NJ. Hopefully, Monty knocks some sense into Brown & convinces him that the Bears have a wonderful program geared towards student-athletes...not an empty Wells-Fargo Arena that had to reduce seating because ASSU can't score 70PPG.

Yeah.....don't see Cal listed anywhere on his radar. I don't see how a top 25 player 'has nowhere else to go'. I would rather he go to UConn than ASSu.

Definitely. Calhoun developed some talented guards over the years, although the most recent graduates were constantly injured. Unfortunately, their coaching situation is unstable & Herbie is probably taking advantage of that sales pitch.

eh. Can't wait to hear from the ASSu fans if he does committ. Can you guys imagine all the ramblings about how they stole Jahii from us and how they stole brown for UW? HAha.

I'm guessing grades are the issue that's holding him back from Cal and Stanford, but I'd certainly love to see one of them swoop in on his recruitment and pluck him away from the Scummies. Although I'd take Josiah and Nick over Jahii and Jabari every day of the week, I can't stand thinking that ASU might have a backcourt comparable to UA's in 2011-2012. It'll certainly make for an interesting rivalry with each of our backcourts having the AZ and Bay Area roots, and with the decommitment of Josiah from ASU, and the recruiting battles for Nick and Jahii.

While it would make for a good competitive rivalry it would suck if he went to ASU. I couldn't care less about PAC10 power - anywhere but ASU.

Let him go to ASU. It will be a lot more satisfying for us fans to watch our Cats kick the **** out of a good sun devils squad.

His demeanor I'm sure scared off a couple schools. He's a cocky SoB, and he likes to get his shots. I wouldn't of minded if Arizona had landed, but a little part of me is glad we didn't.

I remember a PGU interview with Josiah where he said "I would love to play at another school like Kansas with Jabari." It looks like we got the sweet end of this deal. Hopefully UO can make a good push at rebuilding - despite Jabari's previous comments about wanting a National Championship.

He is not going to ASSU, or he would have committed already. Who wants to play at an arena that is less than 50 percent full? He visited ASSU on the 27th of September and yet no commitment. You can not believe their moderator and what he writes.

Oregon? Isnt this the same kid that said he wanted to go somewhere he could win a national championship? Im glad he didnt choose ASwho and it is good to see the Pac getting some good talent. But I doubt he will be able to win a championship by himself and against Nick and Josiah.
