Arizona Cruises Past Chico St 98-60 w/ Photo Gallery
With a team that has as much youth and inexperience as Arizona, it is inevitable that on some nights the senior leaders will need to step up and take over the scoring load.
The Catsí second and final exhibition game against Chico State followed such a script, as Solomon Hill, Mark Lyons, and Kevin Parrom each finished in double digits and led Arizona to a 98-60. Lyons was the top scorer with 20 points, including a pair of three pointers.
The Cats also received 18 points from Hill, who displayed the strength he gained during the offseason. The 6í7, 220 pound senior used his size to his advantage, drawing foul after foul en route to 12 free throws.
Hill was a factor on the boards as well. Rebounding is an area that Arizona should exploit this year with so much size down low, but having an experienced wing that can also get in the paint is something that could separate the Cats.
Meanwhile, Parrom showed why he is expected to excel in the 6th man role this season. After sitting out most of the Humboldt State game, he scored 12 points in the second exhibition, to go with six rebounds and three assists.
The three seniors will be heavily relied upon this season when guys like Kaleb Tarczewski struggle. The seven foot center had some difficulty maneuvering around in the post and it might take him a couple more weeks to get to where he needs to be physically.
Brandon Ashley and Grant Jerrett both put in solid performances but they too will need some time to adjust. And in this transitional period, it makes things a lot easier having a core group of elders who can take charge, just as Hill, Lyons, and Parrom did tonight.
